  107. Union General Burnside is poised to lead his troops across the
  108. Rappahannock and force Lee to fight in the Battle of
  109. Fredricksburg.
  110.
  111. Under the covering fire of artillery  placed on Stafford Heights,
  112. General Burnside has had his engineers build pontoon bridges
  113. across the ice-filled Rappahannock River at three points.
  114.
  115. The Confederates, though outnumbered, have taken up strongly
  116. fortified positions on a ridge that has a commanding position over
  117. the river bottom. When Stonewall Jackson was asked what he planned
  118. to do, he replied, "We will give them the bayonet." The Union has
  119. an almost impossible task of crossing the river plains under
  120. artillery fire and fighting to Marye's Heights and the objective.
  121. Pelham's Rebel horse artillery is on the river plain to delay
  122. Union elements from the southeast.
  123.
  124. A Union officer remarked on the battle, "A cold, bitter, bleak
  125. December night closed upon that field of blood and carnage."
  126.
  127. This is a very challenging scenario for the Union player and was a
  128. real life disaster for the Union force.
  129.
